Several organizations, including the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have done studies on the potential side effects of Paxil. Some of the potential sexual side effects that these studies have shown that Paxil may cause include:

A decreased sex drive (also known as libido) occurred in up to 15 percent of men taking Paxil was documents in several clinical studies. The studies have also shown that women who have been taking Paxil also suffer from decrease in libido; up to 9 percent of women in these studies reported a decrease. The results also show that impotence is most common in men with obsessive-compulsive disorder or post-traumatic stress disorder.

Priapism
Priapism is one of the more rare potential side effects of Paxil. Priapism can be defined as a painful erection of the penis that does not go away, even after sexual intercourse or masturbation. If a patient allows this to be untreated, it can lead to permanent damage to the penis. If there is a possibility that you are showing symptoms of Priapism, consult with your doctor immediately.

The generic drug Paroxetine is an antidepressant drug under the classification of Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI). In the year 1992, the pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline released Paxil, trade name for Paroxetine. The drug is used to treat major depression, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Tricyclic antidepressants and the SSRI drug Paroxetine (Paxil) has similar attributes in treating the aforementioned disorders. Just like any SSRI drugs, though, Paxil (Paroxetine) has been found to have the tendency to cause nausea, somnolence and some sexual side effects but unlike the tricyclic antidepressants, this drug has fewer side effects and has been found to have lower likelihood to cause toxicity. However, Paxil cleft palate birth defect was reported by some women who took the antidepressant drug during their pregnancy.

Every drugs has their individual side effects and adverse effects. You need to know about the different side effects of the drugs you take and inform your doctor if any of these are observed.

Some Of The Usual Side Effects Of Paxil

There are many factors influencing the likelihood of acquiring the drug's side effects and this includes the drug dosage used. Those who has lower Paxil dosage reported fewer and less serious side effects while patients who has a higher dosage consequently has greater tendency to experience severe forms of the drug's side effect. SSRI drugs like Paroxetine (Paxil) has the tendency to cause Post SSRI Sexual dysfunction which includes lowered sexual appetite, difficulty in achieving orgasm (anorgasmia), trouble becoming aroused, loss or decreased sexual stimuli and ejaculatory anhedonia. These side effects are found to be reversible which can last for months or years until the drug is completely withdrawn from the person's system. There are other side effects of Paxil such as nausea, sweating, dizziness, dry mouth, insomnia, asthenia, ejaculatory disturbance, tremor, constipation, high blood pressure, agitation, headache, impaired memory, paresthesia and weight gain.

During the first few weeks of Paxil treatment (approximately 1-4 weeks), the general side effects tapers off as the body becomes accustomed to the drugs' effects. But the birth defect that is cleft palate is another level of grave complication for the affected baby as well as to the parents, especially to the mother. Reports about the drug's tendency to cause cleft lip and/or cleft palate birth defect on babies born by women who took the drug during their first trimester are gathered. This, perhaps, is the gravest form of complication from the drug that is not easily forgotten.

The Food and Drug Administration has approved Paxil, an SSRI antidepressant, to treat depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, anxiety disorder and post traumatic stress disorder in adults.  Efficacy of the drug on these conditions has been established.  However, there have been claims on the occurrence of some side effects.  The extent of the side effects was either minor or major in severity. The digestive system seems to be affected most by the drug.  Diarrhea that lasted for a few days after drug intake has been reported by some patients.

Diarrhea is the recurrent passing of stools described as loose and watery.  The symptoms define the category of diarrhea: complicated or uncomplicated.   Uncomplicated diarrhea has symptoms like thin or loose stools, abdominal cramping, watery stools, sense of urgency, and nausea and vomiting.   Symptoms of complicated diarrhea are pretty much the same with uncomplicated diarrhea but is accompanied with blood, mucus or undigested food on the stool, weight loss and fever. Symptoms of uncomplicated diarrhea with fever, presence of blood, mucus or undigested food on the stool and weight loss makes diarrhea a complicated one.  If any of these symptoms persist, it is best to talk to a doctor.

Almost all cases of diarrhea will fade away on its own.  But before it does, there are possible ways to help ease the symptoms.   Dehydration resulting from diarrhea with vomiting can be managed with drinking plenty of fluids.  Special dehydration drinks are also available to restore electrolyte balance caused by diarrhea.  Doctors also recommend following the diarrhea diet, which consists of bananas, rice, apple and toast (BRAT) .  It has been used for years in treating diarrhea.  Drinking fluids in between, not during, meals is also recommended so as to prevent vomiting.

Generally, diarrhea fades away on its own.   Diarrhea caused by Paxil normally occurs during the first few days of drug intake.  Paxil should be given ample time to get rid of its side effects.   But if you find this symptom disturbing, don%u2019t hesitate to seek help from your doctor. If you have experienced this symptom and would like to put some legal action into it, you can actually consult a Paxil lawyer.
